Street Seen: I try to be alternative but playful

VIENNA CUMMINS, 23

I AM IN the Bourke Street Mall.

I AM a manager at Ginger & Smart in David Jones.

I AM WEARING a suit from Ginger & Smart, so that’s the jacket and pants. It’s quite a statement. It’s not a subtle look, but it’s quite refined because it’s a suit. The colour makes it stand out, but it’s not like I’m wearing something crazy, I’m just wearing something bold. The pants are amazing because they’re elasticated at the back so they’re the most comfortable pants in the world. I can’t wear tight pants anymore. I need comfort. This long-sleeve merino turtleneck is from Glassons. I’m wearing this because it’s freezing cold inside, but the suit looks amazing with just a cute little bralet underneath for more of a sexy evening look. The jacket is amazing – I like the length and how the tie brings the waist in. The shoes are Wittner and the tote bag is Lee Mathews. My rings are a mix of Gucci, Karen Walker and inherited family pieces. My necklace is from Stolen Girlfriends Club, and I think the hoops were $5 from an op-shop.

MY STYLE IS really hard to define. I feel like I could wear an outfit like this and then go back to my Levi’s and Docs (Dr. Martens). I try to be alternative but playful, or clean-cut but in an edgy way. I gravitate towards street style more than what’s trending. I stay away from things that are hyping, like big sneakers, and look more towards photos from Milan Fashion Week.

I ADMIRE THE STYLE OF Chloe Hill (or Chloe Chill, the name of her Instagram and website). She’s a New Zealand stylist. I think she’s super funky and creative with the way she puts things together because you wouldn’t have thought to pair those things, but she does it and always looks amazing. I also like Zanita Whittington, the blogger and photographer.

MY FAVOURITE PLACES TO SHOP are Ginger & Smart because that’s where the suit is from. I also like Dion Lee and Acne Studios. I love op-shopping, so Recycle Boutique or Savers if I’m in the right mood. I go from investing in really expensive pieces to just op-shopping, so I’ll wear my $400 jeans with my $3 T-shirt. I like to keep a balance. I also love my Vans and Docs for shoes, and I do quite like General Pants Co. as well for all the Rolla’s jeans and flares.

MY BIGGEST FASHION MISTAKE WAS jeggings. Jeggings with a puffer jacket and ugg boots, but not the actual UGG brand, like the Big W ugg boots. Also, bum pants in public, which is a Kiwi thing. It just means really bad track pants.

WHEN I WAS A KID I WORE pretty dresses and a bit of double denim. I liked my double denim. I was super girly when I was a kid, and I think I stuck with dresses and anything pink and frilly.

I WOULD NEVER BE CAUGHT DEAD IN That’s a tricky one because I feel like I’m pretty open to anything. I remember thinking it would be impossible for flared jeans to come back in style, but now I’ve got four pairs in different colours. Probably jeggings again, or anything too tight and short – so first-year university clubbing wear.
